Hereditary Cancer Screening

We inherit our genes from our parents. Some of these genes protect us from developing certain types of cancer. Sometimes we inherit an irregular version of a gene, known as a mutation. Genetic mutations can have harmful, beneficial, neutral (no effect) or uncertain effects on our health. Harmful mutations can increase our susceptibility to developing diseases such as breast, ovarian, uterine, colon, or pancreatic cancers. If you, or your immediate family members, have developed cancer, or there is a strong history of cancer over several generations, you may have a hereditary cancer predisposition.

A Simple, Non-invasive DNA Test

The test is simple and involves a DNA sample taken by swabbing the insides of your cheeks. The Kailos Genetics laboratory will examine your specimen for known inherited gene mutations in up to 36 individual genes that increase cancer risk. The test utilizes leading-edge diagnostic technology, callled Next Generation Sequencing. With your genetic marker information, you and your physician can make more informed decisions regarding your healthcare.

Am I Eligible?

  • You or family members have been diagnosed with breast, colon or uterine cancer before age 50

  • Strong family history of ovarian cancer at ANY age

  • Male breast cancer at ANY age

  • The same type of cancer diagnosed across multiple generations

  • One family member has a known genetic mutation

  • Family history of multiple cancer types in an individual

Why Should I Test?

Genetic testing can help you, and your family members, better understand your risks for cancers associated with the gene mutations analyzed in the test. The test results can help you and your physician manage your risks, and implement preventative care programs. Early detection is the key to earlier intervention and offers the best chance for a good outcome. A positive result may indicate that your risk, or your immediate family's risk, is greater than the 'average' individual.
